Wales
Wales possesses some of the most beautiful
ponies in the world. There are four types, divided into sections, but all
come from the same stock--the Welsh
Mountain Pony. All are very similar and show that special
"look of eagles," the
fiery elegance inherited from Arabian
forebears.
Welsh ponies originated in the mountains of Wales. For
generations, Welsh ponies herded sheep and wild ponies over rough, mountainous
country. To survive in a harsh climate, they had to be hardy, balanced,
and fast.
The Collier, sometimes called a Pitter, is a small draft type
used in West Wales in the coal mines. It has short legs with feathered
fetlocks, a wide croup, and great strength and endurance. It comes in all
colors, but mainly grey or bay, and stands 55-61 inches tall.
