Tchenarani

Introduction:  Much of the information I have on this page came from a rough translation off a French website.  If you have any comments or suggestions, or know where I can get a picture of this breed, please click here.

Names:  Tchenaran, Tchenarani.  I will call it Tchenarani as that is what I have seen more frequently, but I am beginning to think that the difference between Arabic names that end in "n" vs. "i" has something to do with plurals.

Origin:  Northern Iran.

Breeding:  A half-breed from Iran, which has been produced since 1700 by crossing Persian (probably Persian Arab) stallions with Turkmene broodmares.  (Another source said "Plateau" stallions, but I recall hearing something about a "Plateau Persian" so this may be the same thing.  Also, the breed is supposedly a couple thousand years old, so not sure what the 1700 date is based on.)  Seldom bred back to itself as stock apparently tends to deteriorate.

Description:  Similar in appearance to the Jaf and Darashouri but is distinguishable by its sloping croup and powerful hindquarters.  Shows Arab ancestry in its appearance.

Color:  Bay, chestnut, black or gray.  One source said any solid color, but that's mostly these.

Size:  Stands about 15 hands; according to one source, sometimes a little smaller.

Temperament:  Lively, courageous and head-strong, but voluntary and willing, as well as gentle.

Features:  Strong, resistant, and fast.  Tough and wiry, with plenty of stamina.

Uses:  Popular cavalry horse.
