Names: Spiti.
Origin: Bred in the very mountainous Kangra district, near the central spine of the Himalayas. Bred almost exclusively by the high class Hindu tribe, Kanyat.
Breeding: A breed of mountain ponies native to Kashmir and Nepal, in northwestern India. It is believed to have descended from the wild horse of Mongolia.
Description: Smaller than the Bhutia. Thick-set, little ponies, with hard, round feet, intelligent heads and remarkably pricked ears. It stands around 46-50 inches and is usually grey or iron-grey in color.
Temperament:
Features: Said to be both tireless and indestructible--as long as they remain in the Himalayas. Spitis, like Pegu ponies, can carry heavy loads.
Uses: Used as sure-footed pack animals over the high and dangerous trails in the Himalayas.
