Finnish Universal

Introduction:  I'm still not quite sure of the difference between the different Finnish breeds but I will consider the horse in this picture to be the Finnish Universal for now.  I'm sure it is either the Finnish or the Finnish Universal.  If you have any comments or suggestions, please click here.

Names:  Finnish Universal, Finnish Universal Horse, Finnish Universal Trotter.  It seems that the Finnish and the Finnish Universal are the same breed now, but I have found evidence that the Universal may be different.  On the page for Finland, it also appears that the Draft and the Universal are types of the same breed and it would seem that the breed has come to be known as the Finnish.  I believe the Finnish Universal Trotter is another name for the Finnish Trotter, which seems to be yet another, separate breed!

Origin:

Breeding:

Description:  Taller and lighter than the Draft.

Color:  Usually chestnut.  Often has white markings.

Size:  About 15.2 hands.

Temperament:  Gentle and alert.

Features:

Uses:  As its name implies, it is a general purpose animal.  In the past it proved indispensable as a transport horse and army remount, but now it is decreasing in numbers.  Fortunately for the Universal it can be bred up to make an excellent Trotter, and in this capacity its popularity is assured.  In Finland there are thousands of professional and amateur drivers who support the 800 or so Trotting Clubs that flourish throughout the country.
