Finnish
Introduction: If you have any comments or suggestions, or can tell me more about the Finnish breeds, please click here.
Names: Finnish, Finnish Horse, Finnhorse. It seems that the Finnish and the Finnish Universal are the same breed now, but I have found evidence that the Universal may be different. On the page for Finland, it also appears that the Draft and the Universal are types of the same breed and it would seem that the breed has come to be known as the Finnish.
Origin: A breed in Finland described as "a medium-sized work-horse." The present breed began about the year 1550 from imported Swedish horses, which in turn had come largely from the Friesian (Holland) draft breed. It is said that 200 years ago the Finnish horse was only 52 to 56 inches in height, and that the great increase in size since that time has come from better feeding and living conditions, plus cross-breeding with larger horses.
