Denmark has always been renowned for horse breeding.  When the tractor saw the end of the majority of heavy horses in Denmark, the Danes set about founding a new sporting horse--animals that would make spirited but good-tempered hacks, hunters and dressage horses, with specimens suitable for all weights.  Based on Scandinavian (such as Norwegian and Swedish) and north German riding-horse types, which mostly trace back to Cleveland Bay stallions, imported during the past 250 years and later improved with Thoroughbreds, any animal of the desired action, conformation and temperament is registered.  Many stallions are again imported from England, and all potential sires rigorously tested.  The subsequent progeny may get a higher register and so on into the stud book.
In addition to the breeds listed above, and imported Russian, Icelandic, and other small horses, one source mentioned a "Lowenberg horse" that was bred in Denmark.  If you know anything about this breed, please contact me!  Thanks!
