Names: Schwarzwald Cold-blood, Black Forest Heavy Horse, Schwarzwälder.
Origin: Germany. Black Forest. Breeding largely in hands of farmers.
Breeding: The Schwarzwald heavy horse is no doubt largely based on the Noriker strain which in the course of many generations has been gradually "made to measure" due to environment.
Description: In form and calibre, between the Noriker and Haflinger. The lightest of the German heavy breeds, being lighter and more compact than many heavy breeds. General impression: an exceptionally well-bred small, stocky cold-blood, with light, dry foundations. Undeniable Noriker descent. A German breed of medium-heavy build, in size about halfway between the Austrian breeds of the Haflinger and the Pinzgauer.
Action: Beautiful, energetic movements in walk and trot. Very surefooted.
Body: Short neck. Short, powerful back with good connection to the broad, muscular, short and oblique quarters. Straight but well-placed, powerfully muscled shoulders. Good barrel.
Color: Generally chestnut in various shades, with light mane and tail. Usually sorrel, with light mane and tail.
Head: Refined.
Hooves: Sound, sturdy, well-shaped.
Legs: Hard, quite well-placed limbs with clearly marked tendons and joints; some hair. Short, strong pasterns.
Size: 14.2 to 15.2 hands. 58-62 inches.
Temperament: Intelligent and easy-going.
Features: Very fast, handsome heavy horse. Mobile and courageous.
Uses: Very industrious and willing in all agricultural work.
