Ireland
Draft/Draught/Heavy Horse |
Pony |
The Irish climate, grass, temperament, and "know-how," have always gone toward producing good horses, including some of the finest steeple-chasers and racehorses in the world. Irish hunters and Irish cobs are types rather than definite breeds, both unfortunately now past their heyday. The cobs, admirably sturdy and versatile, ride-and-drive animals, are particularly hard to find. The hunters are well-made, reliable horses that can really gallop on and jump. A number of international show-jumpers are of this type, including The Rock, one of Italy's best known, successful show-jumpers. They are mostly descendants of Irish Draft mares, with Thoroughbred and Connemara pony blood.
