Pony

Sumba

Ponies take pride of place in the groups of islands that make up Indonesia.  They are indispensable for transport over the rough, roadless country, and the scant grazing keeps them, by natural selection, hardy, small and economical.
The Sumbawa ponies are similar to the Sumba, and on both islands they are used in the popular sport of throwing the lance.  These two islands also claim a better-class, more valuable, and larger type of pony called the Sandalwood--so named because Sumba's most important exports were ponies and sandalwood.
Indonesia is or was also the home of the Bone horse, Bugine horse, Toorky horse, Mcassar horse, Tattoo horse, and Mandar horse.  Java is or was the home of the Java horse and the Preanger horse (crossbred from native mares and imported Oriental horses).  The smaller Sunda islands are or were home to the Flores horse, Sandelholz horse, Savol horse, and Soembawa-Bima horse, and Sumatra is or was home to the Batak pony, Bovenland horse, and Sulu horse.
