Names: Danubian. I believe this is also called the Danube (probably Danubian to separate it from the river!).
Origin: Bulgaria, developed at the state stud near Pleven.
Breeding: A light riding and draft horse that originated in the 1920s from crossing the Nonius, Pleven, and halfbred riding and local breeds with the Russian Trotter and Thoroughbred; also, according to one source, Nonius stallions to Anglo-Arab mares.
Description: A good type of half-bred which, although not of outstanding quality, cannot be considered "common."
Body: Deep and compact, with a strong neck and powerful quarters.
Color: Usually black, bay, or a dark shade of chestnut.
Legs: Comparatively slender.
Size: Standing about 15.2 hands high.
Temperament:
Features: Strong and active.
Uses: A draft and saddle horse, but its performance in the latter role is improved when crossed with the Thoroughbred.
