Introduction: If you have any comments or suggestions, please click here.
Names: Pleven. Named after the stud farm where it originated (or at least the place where the stud farm was located).
Origin: This breed was developed at the state-owned Dimitrov farm near Pleven. It is of recent origin, resulting from the crossing of Russian Anglo-Arabs with local Arab and cross-bred horses. In the early part of the 20th century, Hungarian Arab blood of the Gidran type was added, and the breed was deemed fixed in 1938, although since then some carefully selected English Thoroughbred blood has been introduced.
Breeding:
Description: Not surprisingly, the Pleven has an "Araby" appearance, although it stands somewhat higher than the Arabian.
Color: Chestnut.
Size: Around 15.2 hands high.
Temperament: Kindly, but none the less a bold, spirited ride.
Features:
Uses: As with the East Bulgarian, the Pleven may still be expected to serve as a dual-purpose animal and in some areas can be seen doing light agricultural work as well as being ridden. However, its natural jumping ability also makes it a good competitive horse, and the best horses are used as show jumpers.
