Names: Bosnian, Bosnian Pony, Bosnian Mountain Pony. I will probably just call it the Bosnian on this page for simplicity's sake.
Origin: Jugoslavia, Bosnian mountain regions around Ragotica. Studs: Borike and Han Pijesak. Improved with Arab blood, during the period of the Danubian Kingdoms, to give the Bosnian a more pleasing appearance and height to the withers. Nowadays pure breeding, selected from the stronger species.
Breeding: The Yugoslav Bosnian pony is descended from the Tarpan and shares wild horse characteristics with the Polish Huçul and Konik, and Swedish Gotland (Russ) ponies. The modern Bosnian has a certain amount of Arab blood and is a very useful, versatile animal.
Description:
Action: Very surefooted in walk and trot; galloping and jumping ability.
Body: Low withers, short strong back with muscular loins; sloping croup with low set tail; well-made, muscular, and not very sloping shoulders; deep chest, good barrel.
Color: Mostly brown or grey.
Head: Well bred, reminding one of the Arab strain; small ears.
Hooves: Small, well-formed, iron hard.
Legs: Well-developed steady legs, with short cannons and strong, clearly marked tendons and hocks.
Size: 13 to 14 hands.
Temperament:
Features: Ideal, footsure pack horse, of great stamina and hardiness, with excellent temperament and character; great capacity and willingness to work.
