Although known as Purple Trillium, there is a yellow and a white form of this pedicellate species. The petals are 1 - 2 inches long. The flowers of the dark-colored form are ill-scented, and flies are attracted as pollinators by their maroon color and carrion odor. These native perennials, chiefly northeastern in general distribution, are found in rich, moist woods of our mountains. April - May [Justice, William S. and Bell, C.
