Surprise Meringues

From the Kitchen of Marjorie Roy

 

2 egg whites

1/8 t salt

1/8 t cream of tartar

1 t vanilla

3/4 c sugar

1 6 oz pkg semi-sweet chocolate bits

1/4 c chopped walnuts, optional

Beat egg whites, salt, cream of tartar and vanilla to soft peaks. Add sugar gradually and beat to stiff peaks. Fold in chocolate bits and nuts. Cover cookie sheet with brown paper (clean bag will do nicely). Drop mixture by small teaspoonful. Bake in 300 degree oven about 25 minutes. Cool in open oven, if possible.
