The bright pink flowers, with slender, exserted stamens and a style 1 inch or more long, open before the leaves come out on these rare shrubs. Native only to North Carolina, but cultivated elsewhere, these tall shrubs grow infrequently in bogs and in spruce forests at high elevations in 3 of our mountain counties.
