The inflated, lower petal forms a moccasin-like pouch 1 1/2 - 2 inches long. The flowering stem of this species is leafless. These native perennials often form large colonies in low pinelands and bogs chiefly of the mountains and coastal plain. Like other orchids, they will grow only when certain fungi, or molds, are present in their roots. If this fungus cannot survive in an area the orchid will not live there either. A species of the mid-south area. April - June [Justice, William S. and Bell, C. Ritchie, Wild Flowers of North Carolina. University of North Carolina Press, Chapel Hill, 1968]
