Most garden peonies are hybrids. The two basic types are herbaceous and tree peonies. Herbaceous types die to the ground in late fall; they are mostly descendants of Paeonia lactiflora. Tree (actually shrub) peonies flower from permanent woody branches; they are chiefly descendants of Paeonia suffruticosa. All peonies are extremely long-lived plants of significant size, demanding more than ordinary care in site preparation. In return, they can provide outstanding garden beauty for as long as you live.
