Oregon
Clackamas -- 1.. Where do you live (give city, state/province, country, continent)? I live in Clackamas, Oregon--about 10 miles southeast of downtown Portland, Oregon.
2.. What interesting places are there to see near you? Mt. Hood, the Columbia River Gorge, the Oregon Coast.
3.. What is the climate like where you live? (example: average rainfall, temperatures, variations in weather) Portland (western Oregon for that matter) tends to be quite mild. Winter temperatures are typically in the 30's-50's range, and middle-of-summer temperatures spike in the 90's (rarely higher), but typically summer weather is very dry and not humid. We get a lot of rain in the winter--not sure what average rainfall is, but more often than not it'll be raining in Portland during the winter.
4.. What is the land like where you live? (example: mountains, plains, etc.) The Portland area is at the north end of the Willamete Valley--which runs north-south between the Cascade mountains to the east and the Coast Range mountains to the west.
5.. Are there any interesting plants or animals in your area? If so, please tell me about them. We have a lot of roses (Portland is the "city of roses"), rhododendrons, azaleas, and other seasonal flowers. The forests are mostly evergreen (fir, spruce, cedar, etc.), with alder, birch, and deciduous trees here and there. Deer are common in the forests.
6.. What items (foods, hi-tech, manufactured items, etc.) are produced in your area? The west side of Portland has been dubbed the "silicon forest"--there's a lot of high-tech business there, including Intel which builds silicon chips and the processor brains for many computers today. Nike is also located near Portland (they produce sport shoes, clothing, accessories).
7.. What natural resources are found in your area? Timber is a major natural resource. Logging isn't as prolific as it was 25 years ago in Oregon, but it's still important.
Milwaukie -- 1.. Where do you live (give city, state/province, country, continent)? Milwaukie, Oregon, USA, North America (Milwaukie is a suburb of Portland)
2.. What interesting places are there to see near you? Columbia River Gorge, Mt. St. Helens, the stunning Oregon Coast, Crater Lake National Park, Mt. Hood, Mt. Rainier
3.. What is the climate like where you live? (example: average rainfall, temperatures, variations in weather) Relatively temperate area since we are only 78 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Average rainfall is 36.3 inches and we rarely get snow in Portland (some higher elevations surrounding the city get a few inches each year). Avg. temps: January 39.6, July 76F.
4.. What is the land like where you live? (example: mountains, plains, etc.) Portland is nestled at the north end of the Willamette Valley and the west end of the Columbia River Gorge. It's very green here, even in summer, because there are many evergreen trees. To the west is the Coastal Range--"mountains" that are really big hills. To the east are the Cascade Mountains, including Mt. Hood. To the north is Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Adams and Mt. Rainier--in other words, we are surrounded by volcanoes!! Many of the hills in Portland are also dormant craters/volcanoes!!
5.. Are there any interesting plants or animals in your area? If so, please tell me about them. We see lots of possums and raccoons (dead in the road, especially!). Occasionally, a mountain lion or black bear wanders into town from the outlying areas. Portland is a great place to grow roses, and there are lots of rhododendrons in town as well as wild in the woods.
6.. What items (foods, hi-tech, manufactured items, etc.) are produced in your area? Portland is very much a high-tech town. Intel (makes computer chips like the Pentium processor), Tektronix (makes high-tech testing equipment), InFocus (world leader in digital projectors) and Nike (shoes) are all located in and around Portland. Tourism and manufacturing are also important industries. To the west of Portland is also a very up-and-coming wine producing area filled with award-winning vineyards.
7.. What natural resources are found in your area? Timber/lumber (though this has slowed due to environmental concerns), hydroelectric power (lots of dams on the Columbia River), natural gas, excellent farm land.
