Distinctive appearance, rapid growth, and easy culture are three of garden nasturtium's many strong points. There are two main kinds. Climbing types trail over the ground or climb to 6 feet by coiling leaf stalks; dwarf kinds are compact, to 15 inches tall. Both have round, shield-shaped, bright green leaves on long stalks. Broad, long-spurred flowers, to 2 1/2 inch across, have a refreshing fragrance, come in colors ranging through maroon, red brown, orange, yellow, and red to creamy white. Good cut flowers. Young leaves, flowers, and unripe seedpods have peppery flavor like watercress and may be used in salads. [Bender, Steve, Southern Living Garden Book, The.
