Native to southern Europe. Upright, 1 - 5 feet tall, with deeply cut leaves; blossom spikes densely set with flowers (most are double), 1 - 1 1/2 inches wide, in white, blue and white, or shades of blue, lilac, pink, rose, salmon, or carmine, in spring and early summer. Giant Imperial strain has many 4 - 5 feet vertical stalks compactly placed. Regal strain has 4 - 5 feet base-branching stems, thick spikes of large flowers similar to perennial delphiniums. Super Imperial strain is base branching, has large flowers in 1 1/2-foot cone-shaped spikes. Steeplechase is base branching, has biggest double flowers on 4 - 5 feet spikes, and is heat resistant. Sow seed onto bare soil where plants are to grow, fall planting is best except in heavy, slow-draining soils. Plant in clusters for bigger impact. [Bender, Steve, Southern Living Garden Book, The.
