In tune with the changing of the seasons and in touch with the traditions of the
past, Bill Coleman has captured that dream in this stunning photographic ode to
Amish life.
Introduced by chance to a remote Amish community, he has had
the good fortune of having access to a few of its farms and families, and has
recorded well over two decades of its daily events. From bread making to hay
making to community barn raisings, he takes viewers on a visual journey through
a Pennsylvania valley largely unvisited by tourists and the trappings of the
modern world. Whether its a buggy traversing a winter farmscape, a woman
quilting, or a group of children at play, Bill Coleman captures with a
perceptive eye that one unique gesture that reveals the character of an
individual and a community. Authentic in their subject matter and utterly simple
in their presentation, the images gathered here celebrate the beauty and grace
of this time-honored way of life.
