Many species are grown in the South. Most are cultivated for their big showy flowers, though one is raised for colorful foliage and another is grown for food. . . . One of showiest flowering shrubs. Reaches 30 feet tall in tropics, but seldom over 15 feet tall in the U.S. Glossy foliage varies somewhat in size and texture depending on variety. Growth habit may be dense and dwarfish or loose and open. Summer flowers single or double, 4 - 8 inches wide. Colors range from white through pink to red, from yellow and apricot to orange. Individual flowers last only a day, but the plant blooms continuously. [Bender, Steve, Southern Living Garden Book, The.
