Earth: In hunting, a hole of any kind where the fox can hide. Entire: Either an adjective describing a stallion, or another noun to be used in place of that term. Equidae: The Latin name for the horse family (pronounced ek' wa de). Equine: Scientific name for horses and ponies. Equus: The Latin name for horse (pronounced e'kwus). Ergot: A rounded, wartlike, vestigial growth, in the tufts of hair on the back of the fetlock. In the horse it averages about a half-inch in diameter. In asses and zebras it is much larger. From the French ergot, meaning spur. Euthanize: Medical term for destroying an animal. It is usually performed by injecting a deadly substance into the vein. The animal goes to sleep and never wakes. It is painless and fast. Event horse: Used in horse trials, which include dressage, show jumping, and cross-country riding. |
