Names:  Skyros, Skyros Pony.  As with other ponies, I will leave off the word pony to save time and space!

Origin:  From the island of Skyros, off the coast of Greece.

Breeding:  A small breed of Greek pony indigenous to the island of Skyros of the Sporades group, the Skyros is similar to the ponies of northwestern Europe generally, and also to the Veglia pony.

Description:  These tiny ponies are not unlike Tarpans.

Color:  Usually gray or light brown.

Size:  About 11 hands high when fully grown.  Possibly like Shetlands, they owe their lack of inches to centuries of poor pasture.  38-46 inches.

Uses:  Some are used in other parts of Greece for teaching small children to ride, but the breed, decimated by disease and lack of food was rapidly dying out.  Now a British-inspired society is establishing their preservation.
