Description:  Any horses or ponies of any breed used in playing polo may be called polo ponies.  From a height in this type (not breed) of 48-52 inches in the sixteenth century to 60-64 inches in 1940, it may be seen that progressively larger mounts have been used to improve the game; so much so that the designation "pony" no longer strictly applies.  However, the name will doubtless continue to be used even if the horses eventually reach 17 or 18 hands!

Temperament:

Features:  They must be fast, obedient, capable of sudden starts, stops and changes in direction, and be responsive to neck-reining.
