Hokkaido
Introduction: If you have any comments or suggestions, please click here.
Names: Hokkaido, Hokaido. I will use the longer form for a change because I am more familiar with that spelling. I also found found the name Do-san-ko; I believe this is a native (or local) name for it.
Origin: Indigenous to Japan.
Breeding: Belongs to the Mongolian group (descended from the Mongolian Wild Horse, that is, Przewalski) and is very like that fast, hardy type, the Chinese Pony. This is the information I have on it. I will edit it later. Left on Hokkaido to survive approx. 1600-1850, descendant of Nanbu horse, superior to Hokkaido, found on Pacific coast of Hokkaido, most plentiful of remaining ancient Japanese ponies, numbering about 2000 head. Population Status: Rare

Size: 13-13.2 hands.
Temperament: Willing.
Features: They are small, tough, very sure-footed and thrive on the scantiest feeding. Very enduring. Very strong for their size.
