Benjamin Franklin
Thanks to postmaster general Benjamin Franklin, by 1789 there would be 26 riders delivering mail along more than 2,000 miles of post roads. This picture shows him touring in a one-horse chaise and accompanied by his daughter on horseback—he is stopped to receive an urgent message from a postrider.

Francis Asbury
Riding an average of five thousand miles each year, Methodist minister Francis Asbury brought solace to farm families in times of distress. Often so overworked he had to be lifted onto his horse and tied to the saddle, he pushed through rough weather to deliver sermons, conduct spiritual meetings and accompany doctors on visits to cabins in far-flung colonial settlements. I don't know if this is a picture of him or just a random circuit rider.
