Introduction:  If you have any comments or suggestions, please click here.

Names:  Brumby, Australian Brumby.

Origin:  Brumbies, the "wild" horses that wander the bush in increasing numbers, are a legacy of the gold rushes--when horse breeding was neglected, and horses roamed the range, breeding at will, their progeny often "scrub" animals that took to the wild.

Breeding:  The Brumby has lived wild in Australia for over 150 years.  It is descended from domestic horses that escaped or were abandoned.  These horses formed breeding herds, and their numbers quickly increased.

Description:

Size:  Most are quite small, not standing more than 15 hands at most.

Temperament:

Features:

Uses:  The Brumby is shy and cannot be tamed easily, so it is not used for riding purposes.  Brumbies are considered useless and, sadly, there is a scheme to reduce them by turning them into pet food.
