Tuberous, somewhat fleshy roots give rise to large clumps of arching, sword-shaped leaves -- evergreen, semievergreen, or deciduous depending on type. Lilylike flowers in open or branched clusters at ends of generally leafless stems that stand well above foliage. Older yellow, orange, and rust red daylilies have mostly been replaced by newer kinds; both tall and dwarf selections are available. [Bender, Steve, Southern Living Garden Book, The.
