Native to east-central U.S. Form large clumps of long-stemmed, very showy flowers with drooping, rosy purple rays and a beehivelike central cone. Bloom over long period in mid- to late summer, may continue sporadically until frost. If left in place, bristly seed heads hang on into winter; seeds are favored by finches.
